1. What was the role that the People's National Party (PNP) played in the anti-colonial struggle? The importance of the People's National Pary in the anti-colonial struggle can be traced back to 1938 when the party was founded in the midst of multiple rebellions opposing the colonial system. The foundation of the PNP was an opportunity for the Jamaican people to rise against the colonial system that was abusive towards the uneducated and poor people of Jamaica. It was also important because after being defeated in the first universal elections, the PNP won ten years later under Michael Manley's leadership and anti-colonial ideas. 2. What was/is the role of women throughout the 75 years of the PNP? (Give at least 3 examples) The women were really important during the 75 years of the PNP. 1. Who is your favorite character from the story and what kind of background do they come from? Why? (Use examples from Michelle Cliff's essay, If I Could Write This in Fire, I Would Write This in Fire ) Larissa was my favorite character, she came from a poor background, she was Lorraine's maid and she raised her for 10 years. She had to hide her pain like the death of her sons. And despite all the bad things she stood strong, but still, she was still oppressed by the reality of Jamaica. 2. Why do you think Lorraine’s mother mocks the workers that want independence from England? Because she sees everything from a privileged wealthy perspective, she never had to work or give up anything in order to survive or help her family. Like Lorraine said she's petulant over things like independence claiming there will be no people available to work, according to her. 3. What is a “pain tree” and how does it play a role in the story? “Let us say, Lorraine, I feel a heavy...

1. Who was your favorite character (s) from the film? Why? I really liked Winston the coach, because he was the only one willing to accept Derrick when he went to the gym for the first time, he always believed in him and didn't care about politics. He even tried to convince his parents to let him box when the Don threatened Derrick. 2. How does the film compare to the other Jamaican films from the 70s? (Besides visual effects, think about the plot and character development). It looks like a bigger production, and it has better visual effects. The character development is definitely deeper than the previous film that we have watched. I really liked that character weren't good or bad, enemies turn into best friends, and best friends turn into enemies and firends again. Also, character change their view when the experience different things such as the attack of Derrick's mother. That not only made him taste the gruesome violence, it also changed his dad's point o...

1. How does Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace from Rockers compare to Ivan Martin fro m The Harder They Come ? I think that Horsemouth was more of a righteous character in comparison to Ivan Martin. The obvious difference was their different choices when faced to the reality of the music industry. Horsemouth decides to risk his own safety in order to bring justice to the people, stealing from the mafia. 2. What is your favorite scene from the film? Why? My favorite part is when they steal from the mafia. Even tho I think it's a little cliche and expectable, the illusion of retribution and poetic justice gives you hope. 3. Did you like/dislike the film? Why/Why Not? I liked the film because the music was good, i didn't really like the happy ending because i think it was expectable. But i like how they show things like the mafia behind things like music industry.

1. In general, what did you like and dislike about the film? I would honestly say that the thing that i liked the most was definetely the soundtrack. I really like reaggae music, and i loved that i could see more about the Jamaican culture. Secondly, i was a fan of Jimmy Cliff's music before the movie. My favorite song is Hard road to travel, and i also like the song The harder they come , from the movie. So to me it was something i enjoyed from that point of view, music, basically. I also like that is a crime movie sort of, and at the same time show things such as violence or drugs and even the cons of the Jamaican music industry. 2. Who is your favorite character from the film? Ivan was my favorite character, because first, i really like Jimmy Cliff, and second, i wouldn't say i can relate with Ivan's struggle. But i think that the things he did like dealing drugs on his motorbike are the problems that Jamaica faces because of capitalism, discrimination and pove...
